Karen Lieu began fencing at Pasadena City College after watching fencing on TV during the Summer Olympics in 1984. From that time on she has developed a love for the sport. With hard work and determination, she competed in the Junior Olympics after her first year of fencing. She competed on the Women’s Foil Team at California State University – Fullerton and was awarded Most Outstanding Women’s Foilist two years in a row. Karen studied fencing under Raymond Coldiron, Misha Itkin and Heizaburo Okawa, 3 time Olympian for Japan. Karen has competed both locally and nationally. Her philosophy for fencing is to work hard and have fun. Karen has taught fencing at the elementary school, high school and college levels. She enjoys teaching fencing to students of all ages. Karen holds a bachelor’s degree from California State University – Fullerton in Biochemistry and is a certified fencing coach with the United States Fencing Association. She has also studied Athletic Training/Sports psychology and worked with various sports groups, most notably with the Avengers, a professional indoor arena football team in Los Angeles, California.
